Increased traffic at the border during the summer period

During the summer period of 2011, the Romanian border was transited by more than 11.8 million persons and more than 3 million transportation means, the border policemen ensuring a smooth and operational control in all state border crossing points.
The most transited borders in the summer period were the ones with Hungary and Bulgaria and also Republic of Moldova.

In the summer period of this year, during June - August, more than 11.8 million persons transited the borders of the country, both on the entry and exit way in / from the country, out of which 9,444,000 E.U. citizens and 2,.356,000 non-E.U. citizens and more than 3,.000,000 transportation means.

The most transited border crossing points were the ones in the West and South - the one with Hungary was transited by 4,486,914 persons and the border with Bulgaria by 1,740,480 persons.

As a novelty, in this year an increase of the traffic in the border crossing points situated in the East was recorded, determined especially by the return from holidays of the citizens from the Republic of Moldova who, on one hand, went back to work abroad and on the other hand, they returned from the holidays spent in Romania. Thus, during June - August, the border with Republic of Moldova was transited by more than 1,279,000 persons, out of which 488,000 E.U. citizens and 791,000 non-E.U. citizens, and in August, the traffic of persons through the border crossing points in the East was doubled in comparison with he same periods during the year.

Compared to the summer period of last year it is ascertained that the traffic of persons who transited the border points registered a slight increase, by about 3%.

In the summer period of last year, at the Romanian border over 11,435,000 people crossings and 2,950,000 crossings of transportation means were registered.

In order to avoid crowding and to carry out an operational and smooth control, Romanian Border Police adopted measures to supplement the personnel in the border crossing points and also, according to the situation, to increase the number of control arteries both on the entry and exit way. Thus, in this period over 2,000 border policemen carried out daily activities of surveillance and control of the state border.

From the point of view of the operational situation in the period June - August 2011, border policemen detected 5,868 illegal deeds - 2,136 crimes and 3,732 small offences.

At the same time, border policemen did not allow 993 foreign citizens to enter / exit in / from the country, from different legal reasons.

In the period under review smuggled goods amounting to 25,490,000 lei were detained for the purpose of confiscation independently or in cooperation with the customs workers.
